MONTHLY photos contributed by our members for August - 2019.
Juvenile Semipalmated Sandpiper - Olcott Pier (August 6). August is a good month to start seeing the later-arriving juveniles of many shorebird species, which leave the nesting grounds after the adults. This Semipalmated Sandpiper shows a dark cap contrasting with a distinct white eyebrow and a beautifully "scalloped" back, indicating a juvenile bird.

Juvenile Least Sandpiper - Olcott Pier (August 6). Piers can be a good place to look for shorebirds migrating along the lake. The Olcott Piers have been a good place to check this season as the higher water levels this year have flooded one of the piers, providing more foraging opportunities for shorebirds that rest here. This bird was foraging in the wave water that made it over the top of the pier.
