On the 8th, Gale VerHague captured this image of a classic Richardson’s-type Cackling Goose found in the Town of Sheridan, Chautauqua County, NY by Josh Ketry earlier in the day. Notice the well defined white partial neck collar separating the black neck from the gray-brown body.

Originally found by Liz Cormack on the 4th, this Western Grebe was identified with assistance on a local Facebook page. Thousands of Canada Geese have been moving through the region this month and it's always fun (and, at times, challenging) to try to pick out the diminutive Cackling Geese from their larger cousins. This photo was taken on the 14th in Barker, showing the Cackling Goose's (front) smaller size, stubbier bill and neck, and more silver coloration compared to the Canada Geese behind it.

Joel Spring was very fortunate to photograph this male duo at Iroquois NWR on the 21st...in the background is a typical 'American' Green-winged Teal and in the foreground a much rarer 'Eurasian' Green-winged Teal (or Common Teal as it is known on the other side of The Pond). Notice in the Eurasian bird the white highlights in the face as well as the horizontal white stripe on the flank.
