MEGA! A first record for the BOS Study Area, this immature Roseate Spoonbill has a fun story surrounding it. First reported in an Elma backyard on the 7th, then at Tifft on the evening of the 19th, both from a single observer, and then at Seneca Bluffs Park in South Buffalo on the morning of the 20th where throngs of local birders were able to catch sight of this beauty. A fantastic find and documentation of a Swallow-tailed Kite by Gerry Teal at Wilson-Tuscarora SP on the 26th. In late summer, this species enagages in a post-breeding northward dispersal before fall migration prompts them back to tropical climes south of the border. This is the time of year to keep an eye out - especially along the south Lake Ontario shore!

No longer technically 'countable' in WNY, this Northern Bobwhite was still exciting to cross paths with by Schuyler Lawson at Darien Lakes SP on the 4th. This species no longer has viable populations in Upstate NY and all individuals are assumed escapes/released birds.

This is a great quiz bird as not many people see this familiar species in juvenile plumage. This Dark-eyed Junco was photographed by Ian Campbell at Houghton College and Forest Trails, Allegany County, on the 18th.
