This bright and crisp juvenile Short-billed Dowitcher was found by Jennifer Caughel and Sue Barth (photographed by Sue) at the FedEx retention pond in Blasdell on the 6th.

These Bonaparte's Gulls look to be fighting winds on Lake Erie at Sturgeon Point on the 8th. Note the single juvenile bird on the left. Photo by Sue Barth.

This adult male Eastern Bluebird appears to still be feeding young with its freshly caught grasshopper/katydid. Charlie Kaars took this photo at Knox Farm SP in East Aurora on the 8th.

This is a great image for comparing gull sizes. Sue Barth took this photo at Woodlawn Beach SP on the 3rd to document this sub-adult Lesser Black-backed Gull. Note the size comparison to the adult Herring and Ring-billed Gulls to the right.

While not the the most in-focus photo, this image of a Baird's Sandpiper is a great learning tool - note the long, attenuated silhouette, the thin bill, the dark-centered scapulars (feathers on the back) and the long wingtips. What isnt apparent in this photo is the buffy breast wash - probably due to the angle and lighting. This photo was taken on the 13th in Niagara, Ontario by Angelique Mori.

This is a great quiz bird because it looks nothing like either adult - so I just gave you a clue! The speckling on the breast gives away this bird's relation to our familiar American Robin. Bill Massarro took this photo of a juvenile Eastern Bluebird at Bennett Beach, Erie County on the 11th. At this age, there would likely be an adult bird in attendance to help with the ID.

Migration is definitely underway by mid-August as exhbited by this adult male Yellow-rumped Warbler that Shelley Seidman photographed at Times Beach on the 14th. We know this because this species does not breed in the vicinity of downtown Buffalo. Recent cold fronts have ushered in early migrants by this time of year.

Olive-sided Flycatcher seen in Forestville (Chautauqua County) on August 19th. Photo by Gale VerHague.

Sue Barth literally almost stumbled upon this juvenile Red-necked Phalarope at Woodlawn Beach SP on the 19th. The weather the previous day was windy with rain - a perfect concoction to drop shorebirds that are migrating over the region!

Charlie Kaars took this sublime photo of the Woodlawn Red-necked Phalarope, also on the 19th. We can tell it is a juvenile because of the golden tones (braces) along the back combined with the dark cap and eye patch. Woodlawn was probably this bird's first stop after leaving the Arctic!

A bit of a Patagonia-Picnic-Table-Effect happened at Woodlawn Beach SP on the 19th. Arriving to look for Barth's phalarope, Rob Sielaff found and photographed this juvenile Red Knot!

Continuing the Patagonia-Picnic-Table-Effect at Woodlawn Beach SP, Megan Miller photographed this Black Tern resting on the beach on the 20th.

This is a superb image of a Least Sandpiper by Bill Massaro. The photo was taken at the Seaway Slip along the Buffalo Outer Harbor on the 18th. Note the warm chestnut tones to the crown and scapulars as well as the fine-tipped, slightly drooping bill...and of course, the pale greenish-yellow legs.

This roosting Common Nighthawk was a nice surprise for Donna Johnston in a suburb of St Catharines, Ontario on the 15th.

This flycatcher has a large-headed and short-tailed appearance along with the giveaway vested appearance. Olive-sided Flycatcher was photographed near Olean, NY (Cattaraugus County) on the 19th by Deborah Yaworsky.

The Batavia Wastewater Treatment Plant had been a reliable location to find an Eared Grebe for many years beginning around 2000 and then that stopped in 2018. Then, in 2022, individuals started appearing again. This faded adult was found on the 19th by John Sojda and photographed here, by Dominic Sherony on the 21st.

Andrea Heine and Celeste Morien discovered a group of 4 Red-necked Phalaropes with a single Wilson's Phalarope at the Batavia WWTP on the morning of the 20th. The night previous experienced heavy rainfall and wind which likely grounded these birds. The flock continued to grow over the next several days and ended up with 3 Wilson's and 9 Red-neckeds! Photo by Becky Harbison on the 22nd showing 2 Wilson's in the top center and left - the remainder being Red-necked.

This image taken by Karen Lee Lewis of the phalarope gang at Batavia WWTP captures them all! See if you can pick out the Wilson’s! Karen took this photo on the 24th.

This buffy basic-plumaged Bobolink pausing at the top of ironweed made for a beautiful image captured by Terri Kershaw on the 25th at St. Catharines, Ontario.

Another juvenile Red Knot was found and photographed by Bill Massaro at Grandview Bay, Angola, NY on the 27th.

This is a great image of a Yellow-bellied Flycatcher showing the rich olive-yellow wash to the breast with a vested pattern as well as the eyering that is enlarged behind the eye. You can also see the yellow belly! This is probably the easiest of the empidonax flycatchers to identify without needing to hear a vocalization! This photo was taken by Shelley Seidman at Times Beach NP on the 27th.

This Sanderling is exhibiting behavior synonymous with the presence of an overhead predator...crounching down next to some cover, a piece of driftwood, with eyes to the sky. Note the extensive marbling on this bird indicating it is molting into basic plumage. Charlie Kaars took this photo on the 25th at Woodlawn Beach SP.

This is a very fresh juvenile Semipalmated Plover. Note the pale feather-edging on all the scapulars and wing coverts giving the bird a scaly-backed appearance. These pale edges wear off fairly quickly. Gale VerHague took this photo on the 25th at Dunkirk Harbor.
