There is nothing like staring into the eyes of a Short-eared Owl, well maybe a Great Gray Owl, but I digress. This stunning bird was photographed in St Catharines, Ontario on the 15th by James Kroeker.

This Eastern Phoebe was an unexpected find at Erie Basin Marina on the 15th by Ian Campbell. Most likely this is an early arriving migrant vs an individual attempting to overwinter.

This adult Slaty-backed Gull was photographed by Ryan Griffiths at Thorold, Ontario on the 4th. The Welland Canal has hosted a Slaty-backed during the winter months in the years 2017, 2019-2020, 2022 and now, 2024.

Another photo of the Thorold Slaty-backed Gull by Ryan Griffiths. Note the leg color, pinkish, the wide white tertial tips or crescents, mantle color and bill/head structure in differentiating from Great and Lesser Black-backed Gulls of the same age.

The understated beauty of the Tundra Swan. Note the varying amounts of yellow in the lores of these three individuals! One shows but the tiniest speck - note that the presence/absence of yellow in the lores is not the only way to identify a Tundra vs a Trumpeter! Our region is blessed with lots of open waterways during the winter and this is the time to catch up with the myriad of waterfowl that overwinter. This drake Common Goldeneye was captured riding the current above Niagara Falls, NY from Goat Island by Ian Campbell on the 24th.

Black Scoters are the least common of the three species in our region. These two were photographed by Ian Campbell from Fort Niagara SP on the 24th. Note the rear bird showing yellow at the base of the bill - this is an immature male.
