Josh Ketry found two Western Willets at Hamburg Town Park on the 3rd. Don Dixon photographed the birds later that day. Inclement weather the previous overnight likely grounded these passage migrants.

May is what most birders wait for all year long! Forest Lawn Cemetery offers amazing opportunities to see concentrations of migrants during this most-treasured month. Don Dixon photographed this Cape May Warbler on the 2nd in the flowering cherries around Mirror Lake.

Hannah Dodington found a group of 6 Short-billed Dowitchers near Welland, Ontario on the 7th. Kayo Roy took this photo on the same day. Note the ‘clean’ rufous necks with light spotting on the sides as well as the pale patches on the lower belly and vent.

Sue Barth also caught up with the Forest Lawn Summer Tanager present on the 7th. We can age this bird as a 1st-summer male by the greenish-yellow flight feathers, wing coverts and a few patches within the contour feathers. This age group is variable this time of year with some birds looking a lot more ‘patchy’ than this one. Kim Weeks originally found this beauty.

May 3rd provided the region with stormy weather which in turn provided some nice shorebird fallouts including these 15 Western Willets at Dunkirk Harbor! Originally found by Devin Banning and Katelyn Davis, this photo was shot by Nathan Stimson later that day.
