Another Erie County "First"! This beauty was seen and photographed by Doug Mutton on the 6th in Clarence and is most likely the same bird that was first reported by Dean DiTommaso at Buffalo Harbor SP five days earlier.

Two days after Doug Mutton found the Black-bellied Whistling Duck in Clarence, he saw it again at the same spot. This time, many birders got to see it!

This Black-bellied Plover was at the Buffalo Outer Harbor Seaway Slip on the 2nd. He didn't stay very long but was still fun to see!

This gorgeous Nelson's Sparrow was located by Tony Dvorak at Times Beach on June 2nd . Josh Ketry and i tried to relocate and hawkeyes Ketry found it first! it was giving great views for a few moments at a time and then flew further back into the preserve .. searched for and not found again.. a lifebird for me and most of those fortunate to see it.

Tony Dvorak found this fantastic Nelson’s Sparrow at Times Beach on the 4th. Several others were able to relocate this bird and there was mention of the possibility of two individuals present, but that was never substantiated. A very rare spring record for the region!

TJ Mudd also enjoyed Erie County’s first Black-bellied Whistling-Duck at Clarence Town Hall on the 6th when most local birders delighted in seeing this individual.

Joel Strong found this rare-in-summer Iceland Gull (Thayer’s type) at Point Breeze, Orleans County, NY on the 14th. Note the dark iris and the pale and restricted black webbing in outer primaries.

On June 11, two Upland Sandpipers put on a show for Tony Dvorak at Tillman Road WMA in Clarence, NY. This is the last known breeding location for this species in Erie County. If you visit PLEASE take care not to disturb the Uppies!

Furnishing another first for Erie County was this elegant Black-necked Stilt found by Grand Island resident, Paul Leuchner, who was kayaking around the islands south of Beaver Island SP on the 19th. Unfortunately this photo didn’t surface until the 20th and subsequent searches proved unfruitful. A big ‘Thank You’ to Paul for sharing this fantastic find!

I happened upon an American Crow harassing a Peregrine Falcon (likely the nesting pair on campus) on my way to the UB South Campus on the 23rd. 2 falcons then perched on top of the St. Joseph parish building.

This was an American Woodcock we accidentally flushed on the BOS field trip to Tillman Road WMA on the 23rd in search of Grasshopper Sparrows! This was the first time I had ever seen one.

This young Barred Owl was fun to see in the southtowns on the 19th. If you look closely, you'll see a little bit of down left. He called to a nearby adult many times, which added to the enjoyment.

This Least Bittern spotted on the 26th at Times Beach Nature Preserve was a lifer for me, but I almost missed it because of how tiny they are!

Shelley Seidman took this image on the 24th from LaSalle Park. Originally found on the 23rd by Hans Mann, this American White Pelican continued to entertain into July along the break wall in the Buffalo harbor.

Josh Ketry photographed this Grasshopper Sparrow at the Union Ship Canal, just south of Tifft NP, on the 4th. Multiple individuals were present indicating a newly established colony at this location. Great discovery, Josh!
